AFAMILY from Widnes has been the victim of two bike thefts in the last three months.

Jenny Hares reported her son’s bike, a blue and silver GT Verb, had been stolen from outside PureGym on the Hive on Sunday, October 21. The thief is said to have left a black and red ‘scruffy BMX’ in its place.

Police have recovered the BMX and are keen to speak to the owner or rider of the bike

Mrs Hares said: “His friend was inside the gym and he went in to get the key to the chain already securing his friend’s bike. He left it all of five minutes and ran out to lock it and it was gone.”

“It was his birthday gift for his 16th and now he has no gift.”

“Second one to have been stolen in three months and we’re both heartbroken.”

The first bike stolen from the Hares was a blue and orange Giant Stance and was taken from Saints Peter And Paul Catholic College.

It had a Halfords lock securing it, but a pair of bolt cutters were used ● to remove it.

She said: “Police have said the gym doesn’t have CCTV outside and council CCTV isn’t covered there.”

“Something needs to be done now, bike thefts are happening every day. This was the second one stolen on Sunday.”

Police have posted a picture of the BMX and the stolen bike on facebook and twitter, appealing to the public to contact them if they have any information.

They have also reminded members of the public to ensure their bikes are secured with a good lock and left in view of the public or CCTV if possible.

Anyone with information can contact the police on 101 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
