Marilyn’s story – as ‘she tells it’ on stage

APOIGNANT play about the story behind the iconic Marilyn Monroe is coming to the Brindley Theatre in March.

The play, Marilyn, is told by her, sat alone in her dressing room. A stripped back, ordinary girl telling her story, not the girl in the white dress and red lips that the world came to know.

Coming directly from the West End run, Breakthrough Theatre presents the brand new one-woman show that follows the dark and thrill-filled life of Marilyn.

London Theatre Reviews said the production is: “A play that will be loved by Marilyn fans and enjoyed by those who don’t know her quaite as well yet.”

Marilyn Monroe, born Norma Jeane Mortenson, was an American actress, model, and singer. Famous for playing comic “blonde bombshell” characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and was emblem- atic of the era’s attitudes towards sexuality.

Although she was a top-billed actress for only a decade, her films grossed $200 million (equivalent to $2 billion in 2018) by the time of her unexpected death in 1962. More than half a century later, she continues to be a major popular culture icon.

Monroe’s troubled private life received much attention. She struggled with substance abuse, depression, and anxiety. Her second and third marriages, to retired baseball star Joe DiMaggio and playwright Arthur Miller, respectively, were highly publicised and both ended in divorce.

On Sunday, August 5 1962, she died at age 36 from an overdose of barbiturates at her home in Los Angeles. Although Monroe’s death was ruled a probable suicide, several conspiracy theories have been proposed in the decades following her death.

The show will be at the Brindley on Friday, March 1. Tickets are £18, £16 from www.thebrindley.org.uk and the Brindley box office on 0151 907 8360.
