● Rob Lea to keep the gap between the two sides close.

In the pairs the Brow’s Eric Peel and Brian Spruce widened the gap once more, but the Hammer had the Brow’s nerves jangling as Helen Lyons and Sean Connor struck to take the next game.

The Brow were still going for the win as Neil Platt and Paul Linger took the final pairs game, but again the Hammer through Rob Sutton kept up the pressure taking the next game.

It was still open to either team with two games to play, but with the valiant Hammer finally succumbed as the Brow’s Mark Harrison ended their hopes before Eric Peel added the final game to the Brow’s winning total.

In the second semi-final, Simms Cross Institute took on the Millfield and conceded the first two games to the Millfield’s Ian Wall and Keith Horabin, but the final game of singles went to the Stute through Brian Dutton to put a check on the Milly’s charge, which was temporally halted as opening pair, Brian Dutton and Dave Evans levelled for the Stute.

The Millfield went ahead through again through Ian Wall and Billy Fox, but once more the Stute through Andy Abbott and Glyn Owen made it three all.

In the final round of singles however the Millfield, in a defiant mood, proceeded to take the remaining three games and the match through, Billy Fox, Chris Taylor and Mike Howard.

In the Final, the Mill Brow SC taking on the Millfield, fell behind as the Millfield took the first game through, Ian Wall in a quick fire 16 darts, but the Brow were unperturbed as they levelled the score through, Neil Platt, then went ahead as Brian Spruce gave them a lead they were not to surrender.

In the pairs, Charles Roberts & Mark Harrison rolled back the years with a solid performance to give the Brow a healthy lead. The Millfield responded with a win from Billy Fox & Ian Wall, but Neil Platt & Paul Linger extended the Brow’s lead once more and despite Mike Howard staving off defeat for the Millfield, it was not for long as the Brow’s captain, Paul Linger, ensured that the silverware was going back to the Brow and Dave Powell added to their winning tally by taking the final game and the trophy in the Noreen Magee cup. ● On Friday night, the Merriman and George Williams Cups were played for at Simms Cross Institute and Widnes Bowling Club.

In the George Williams Cup, sponsored by Widnes Cricket Club, the first semi-final was between the Cricketers Arms and the Mill Brow SC.

The Cricketers conceded the first game to the Brow’s Mark Harrison, only to see the score quickly levelled by the Cricketer’s Graham Fenney.

The Brow re-established their lead by taking two in a row through, Brian Spruce and opening pair, Chris Bright and Paul Woodward.

The Cricketers responded with a win from Brian Dwyer and Graham Fenney to narrow the gap, only to see it widen again as Ray Linger and Paul Linger added to the Brow’s tally.

The Cricketer’s Arms were still in with a chance and were determined as Paul Mason took the next game, but it wasn’t to be their night as the Mill Brow SC took the remaining two games and the match through Dave Powell and Ray Linger to go through to the next round.

The second semi-final was between, Hough Green SC and Widnes Cricket Club.

Hough Green took the first two games through, Andy McIntosh and Duane Lawton. The Cricket Club replied, taking a win through Danny Mellor, only to see Hough Green’s opening pair, Paul Woods & Andy McIntosh (15 darts) take it back.

The match was still open as Danny Mellor and Adam Mellor added a further win to the Cricket Club’s tally.

However, Hough Green struck back taking the remaining four games and the match through pairs Derek Turton and Keith Glover.

This was then backed up by singles Keith Glover, Barry Sefton and Tony Barker who went through to the next round.

In the final, Mill Brow SC took on Hough Green SC in a match that was a lot closer than the score reflects.

The Brow started well, taking the first two games through, Mark Harrison and Neil Platt.

Then Hough Green recovered a point as Paul Woods put them on the score board, but it wasn’t to be Hough Green’s night as the Mill Brow SC stormed forward taking the remaining six games through pairs Chris Bright and Paul Woodward, Dave Powell and Eric Peel and Ray Linger and Paul Linger.

These were followed by singles, Chris Bright, Eric Peel and Paul Woodward.

With the match well and truly won, it was the Mill Brow SC who took home the George Williams Cup.
