THE YKK-sponsored Widnes Wild are pleased to announce the return of forward Mike Mawer for the forthcoming 2019/20 Laidler Division season.
Mawer played an important role in last season’s league and play off winning team, notching up a careerbest eight goals and 15 assists in 28 league games and he returns for his
fourth season in Wild colours.
Mawer was one of the players who crossed the Pennines from Sheffield to join the club in the summer of 2016 when Ollie Barron took over as player coach.
Since then he has played 96 games for the Wild in total, scoring 14+26 and picking up 26 penalty minutes.
Mike also represented Great Britain students at ice hockey at the 2017 World University Games and was involved with the Team GB women’s team as a fitness and conditioning coach at the recent world championships in Dumfries.
25 year old, 6’2” Mawer learned his junior hockey in his native Grimsby and then spent three seasons with the Sheffield Senators and one with the Sheffield Spartans, playing some 114 NIHL games for Sheffield teams before moving to Widnes in 2016.
Wild head coach Mike Clancy said: “We are excited to have retained the services of Michael Mawer for the up and coming 2019/20 season.
“Michael is a huge asset to the team on the ice, adding a good physical presence to the squad.
“I’m looking forward to seeing Michael build on his points tally from last season.”
Looking ahead to the new season, Mawer said: “It is great to be returning to the Wild this season for my fourth year.
“I’m looking forward to the new challenge and to pushing for the same success as last season.”
