Charity golf day makes £26k for kids

-

FOOTBALL legend Robbie Fowler is proving he’s as accurate on the golf course as he was in front of goal by leading his team to success in the Stick ‘n’ Step Charity Golf Day.

The former Liverpool star teamed up with his old Anfield team mate Jason McAteer, one-time Everton rival Tony Grant and Sky Sports Commentator Rob Palmer to claim the first team prize in the very competitive event at Pryors Hayes Golf Club in Chester on Bank Holiday Monday.

£26,000 was raised at the annual event organised by the charity, which helps children with cerebral palsy to find their independence.

Yield UK, the Widnes based recycling company was the headline sponsor of the day that included an auction, raffle and many golf challenges.

The team event was the one to win though and it drew a larger field of players than even the British Masters which takes place at Hillside this week.

Fowler and McAteer have been invited to compete in the Pro-Am at the prestigious event and showed they are in good form.

“It’s amazing to see so many people supporting us year in, year out.” said

Rob Palmer, who is a Stick ‘n’ Step ambassador and one of the founders of the charity.

“It has all of the trappings and organisation of a top corporate event at an affordable price for the amateur golfer.”

There was a re ‘uniting’ of Old Trafford legends Frank Stapleton, Alex Stepney, Arthur Albiston and Stuart Pearson as well as teams captained by Everton greats Kevin Ratcliffe and Derek Mountfield.

Just four points separated the top five prizewinning teams, but the event was won by Fowler and co with an incredible 91 points.

“He was more Rickie Fowler than Robbie Fowler.” added Palmer.

The revelation of the winning scores were kept until last as comedian Stan Boardman and star ● ● of The Voice star Ally Mac kept the guests entertained in the clubhouse.

“Rob’s son Ellis was one of the first children to attend sessions at Stick ‘n Step and now he’s living independently and has a career as a journalist at the BBC,” said operations manager Sarah Smithson.

She added: “We now have nearly 100 children attending conductive education sessions at our two centres in Wallasey and Runcorn.

“Once again, our supporters and sponsors have made the most tremendous effort to make our annual golf day a huge success.

“We would like to thank everyone who played or helped to make it happen.

“This is one of our most important events of the year and it has provided a fantastic boost to our fundraising.” ●
