New co-ordinator for LGBT patients

-

A NEW project co-ordinator has been appointed to help improve services and support for people in the LGBT community who are affected by cancer across Merseyside.

Joe Lavelle is the new Macmillan LGBT cancer programme co-ordinator, which is funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and hosted by Sahir House.

The project aims to ensure that the needs of LGBT people affected by cancer in the Liverpool City Region are acknowledged and addressed in the provision of services, information and support.

Joe, who joins Clare Carter and will be based at Sahir House, said: “I’m very excited to be working on this important programme.

“I have previously worked with Citizens Advice, where I was instrumental in promoting the advice needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people and received the Jane Roden Navajo Champions Memorial Award in recognition of that work.

“I have a history of being active within the local LGBT community and look forward to Macmillan Cancer Support and Sahir House working together to improve the experiences and outcomes of LGBT people with cancer.”

Launched last year the project hosts various events and campaigns to engage with LGBT communities looking at issues relating to cancer, reducing isolation and increasing awareness, information and wellbeing.

Joe and Clare will also engage with professionals, to provide training and support, to help them meet the specific needs of LGBT communities.

Tessa Willow, chief executive of Sahir House, added: “We are delighted to welcome Joe to Sahir House.

“His experience of project management and working with local LGBT people to identify service improvements are a great fit for this role.

“He understands what is needed for effective partnership working, particularly a new partnership like this one between Sahir House and Macmillan.”
