I tried to get Danny to stay

MICHAEL ELLISON admits he wanted to keep departing Danny O’Brien at the Millbank next season following his Runcorn Linnets exit this week.
O’Brien completed a century of first-team appearances for the club last term but has decided to move on ahead of the new campaign.
The full-back was a key member of the team that secured promotion to the Evo-Stik West in 2018 following his move from Cammell Laird two years earlier.
He arrived as a midfielder but was successfully converted to a right-back by manager Ellison, who also entrusted O’Brien as the club’s specialist penaltytaker.
O’Brien clocked up 18 starts last term during Linnets’ first season at Evo-Stik level but lost his place as a fixture in the team.
He netted an impressive seven goals, reaching an overall tally of 20 for the club with 10
from the penalty spot.
With O’Brien’s departure confirmed Ellison said: “What can I say about Danny? He’s been absolutely fantastic for us since he first stepped through the door.
“He was one of the players, who stayed when I first got the job and helped stabilise the club during a difficult period.
“He was also a massive part of the title-winning side and he will be sorely missed at the Millbank.
“I did try to persuade Danny to stay but I do understand his reasons for leaving.
“I’d like to wish him all the very best where ever he decides to play his football next season and he will always be welcome back at Linnets.
“He’s a top player and a top lad. Good luck Dan.”
Linnets also announced last week that all pupils in the top two year groups at Runcorn secondary schools are to receive free passes for the 2019-20 season.
The Green and Yellows are keen to further develop their fanbase by attracting a new generation of fans.
