Rdsworth country

-

They continued southwards along the ridge, enjoying excellent views from here.

They took in the summits of Great Rigg, Rydal Fell and Heron Pike.

They left the ridge at this point and descended steeply to Alcock Tarn.

Their path now followed the old Coffin Road.

This is so called as it was the route used to take the dead of Rydal to the church in Grasmere for burial.

The return leg was via White Moss and the edge of the lake back into the village.

John Cormack led the B party for their circular walk. John’s group headed out of the village along the Easedale Road and picked up a path through lush fields surrounded by various fells.

This was followed by a steady climb in rougher country and a change in direction.

They passed alongside Sourmilk Gill and arrived at the peaceful location of Easedale Tarn.

After a short break there was a steep climb, and some scrambling, to reach the ridge of Blea Rigg.

They descended to the banks of Stickle Tarn before heading back up onto the ridge.

They had fine views in each direction, and kept an eye on the weather.

After reaching Lang How the path started to descend and they followed a clear route into the Allan Bank estate (once home to National Trust founder Canon Rawnsley, now in its care). The route descended into the village.

The D party, which was led by Grahame Reid, also involved a circular walk.

The group left the village eastwards and picked up the path to reach Rydal Water.

This very tranquil spot was left behind as they followed the lakeside for a while before reaching a path that took them to the southern edge of Grasmere Lake.

A scenic walk through some woodland, and lakeside for some of the time, took the walkers back into Grasmere village.

There was an opportunity at the end of each walk for the members to explore the village and take on board some refreshments.

There were a variety of venues and each was a welcome sight after a day’s walking in some really spectacular countryside.

The rain appeared just before everyone headed back to the awaiting coaches – good timing.

A huge thank you to all of the walk leaders and the committee for some amazing walks and a fantastic day.

The next walks on the programme are Matlock Bath on August 4 followed by Ingleton on August 18.
