ABC Taxi’s finals showcase excellent standard of bowls

The fourth quarter final saw the second lady in the comp, Paula Whelan, take on Barry Hopley and it was Barry who took the lead 10-0.

The jack changed hands on a number of occasions but Barry finished the stronger winning 21-12.

The first semi saw Gary take on John and, in a hard fought encounter, it was John taking the win 21-19. The second semi was between Tim and Barry and this was also a tough game after 20 ends.

The game was level at 12 across but it was Barry who found a mark going on to win 21-14.

The final saw John take on Barry and it was John that started better leading 6-3 after six ends. However, Barry got his game together playing some great bowls and was crowned the winner, 21-09. League Secretary Pat Crowe thanked Subscripti­on BC for the use of their facilities and also thanked Henry Roberts and Rob Johnston.

Pat went onto thank all the players and spectators and also congratula­ted the players for the standard of bowls that was played.

Section one table toppers Norley remained unbeaten after a full house 168-106 win at Kingsley A while Kevin Duncalf (21-05) and John Brooker (21-08) were the best winners on the night.

Second placed Pavilions A travelled to take on third placed Castle SSC and came away with a superb 131-154 victory. Leading the way for the Lions was Dave Williams (21-08) and the best reply for Castle was Eric Webber with 21-10.

Fourth placed Helsby A lost ground on the leaders after a disappoint­ing 155-118 loss at Pavilions B. The outstandin­g player on the day was Pavilion’s Alan Richards (21-02) and John Rawlinson (21-08). The best reply for Helsby was by Rob Ellison (21-14).

Best win in section one last week was Alan Richards (Pavilions B) with 21-02.

Section two leaders Red Lion got back to winning ways with a full house 168-68 against Subs. No fewer than five players won in single figures with Dave Hughes leading the way (21-04), Mark Nield, Anthony Wilkinson and Hazel Williams (all 21-06) and Elaine Garner (21-08).

Second placed Norton Arms B took on Egerton B and ran out the winners 146-103.

Neil Scott (21-02) and Robert Bennison (21-05) led the way for the Arms and the best reply for Egerton was Pat Cooney (21-06).

Norton Arms A moved into third place despite a loss 128-126 at Halton RBL B.

Peter Hollett jnr (21-06) had the best win for the Legion and the best replies for Norton were through Phil Hughes (21-03) and Jeff Hughes (21-08).

The best win in section two was Neil Scott (Norton B) by 21-02.

Section three leaders Crowton had a disappoint­ing 130-128 loss at Helsby B. John Wright (21-05) led the way for Helsby and the best reply for Crowton was Phil Sidebotham with 21-06.

Second placed Goshawk made up ground on the leaders with a 159-91 win over Helsby D with no fewer than four players winning in single figures.

Peter Robinson and Anthony McCrorie (both 21-05), Tony Galley (21-08) and Sara McKenzie (21-09) were the best replies for Helsby.

Third placed Grapes ABC Taxi’s and fourth placed Grapes B were without a game this week.

Best win in section three was John Wright, Peter Robinson and Anthony McCrorie all with 21-05 and the best win overall last week Alan Richards and Neil Scott both with 21-02.
