Roxburgh is back in Town ‘He looks strong and will be pushing for a starting spot’: McManus

AIDAN Roxburgh has returned to Runcorn Town one season after leaving for Welsh National League outfit Holywell Town.

Roxburgh then enjoyed a spell with Greenfield in the Welsh Alliance but has been persuaded by manager Paul McManus to head back to the Viridor Stadium.

McManus, who replaced Chris Herbert midway through last term and is preparing for his first full season in the hotseat, has also re-signed Chris Cairns and Joe Holt from City of Liverpool this summer.

Roxburgh initially joined Town as an 18-year old in 2017 and made his debut for the club in an FA Cup tie against AFC Darwen.

The midfielder struggled to find regular football under Herbert, however, with 13 of his 20 appearances that season coming from the bench.

He made the decision to seek pastures new in Wales and McManus believes Roxburgh has reaped the benefits of consistent senior football with Holywell Town.

“It’s great to have Aidy come back in with us ahead of this season and I’ve already been impressed with what I have seen from him,” the player-boss said.

“Moving to us originally from youth football was difficult, but his full year in men’s football last season, playing week-inweek-out, has looked to have worked wonders for us.

“He looks strong and will certainly be pushing for a starting spot in what is looking more and more like a very competitive squad.”

Runcorn begin their HSL Premier Division campaign at home to Squires Gate on Saturday.

They have enjoyed a positive pre-season schedule, winning six of their seven matches and losing only to local rivals ● Widnes last week.

Town have scored 19 goals in their seven warm-up games, with Roxburgh opening the scoring in their final run-out against Cape nhurst Villa on Friday.

McManus and Kevin Exell’s double helped Runcorn to an emphatic 4-0 victory.
