Town bow out of Vase after home defeat

-

There was yet another chance for West to take the lead on 68 minutes, bur Reid saved Grimshaw’s header over the bar, the resulting corner came to nothing and Town cleared.

There was a chance for Weaver to take the lead on 72 minutes but the shot was just over the crossbar for a goal kick.

Runcorn Town were awarded a free kick after 74 minutes as Matthew Cook brought down Owen Dursley in what was a cynical foul.

The free kick did not amount to anything and the West defensive unit did their job.

West Didsbury had a penalty appeal turned down on the 78th minute by the referee as James Cottee’s shot was deflected for a corner, which was swung in towards the goal line and Christopher Middleton’s shot from close range rattled the right post.

The deadlock was broken after 81 minutes with Runcorn Town defenders giving Kristian Holt too much space as his shot hits a divot and goes over the diving Adam Reid and into the bottom right corner of the goal.

Runcorn Town were pressing for an equaliser but created no suitable chances.

To add insult to injury Runcorn Town were down to 10 men in the last minute of injury time with Adam Reid having words with the linesman on the far side of the pitch who then called the referee over and as a result Adam Reid was given a straight red card. Manager Paul McManus took the jersey and the gloves.

Mr Woodward brought the game to a close with Runcorn Town going out of the competition at the first hurdle after a poor performance.

Overall West Didsbury were the better team on the day and fully deserved their win.
