Strong Chester deal heavy blows to Town

RUNCORN Town kicked off the Cheshire Senior Cup competitio­n this season against a strong Chester FC line-up, which consisted of a mixture of first team, reserves and youth players.

There were a few changes since the 5-0 victory against Atherton LR on the previous Saturday.

Liam Turner started in the right back position with Aidan Roxburgh unavailabl­e due to injury. Stephen Wainwright was in the left back position. Simon Thelwell returned to the starting eleven in central defensive position alongside Marcus James. Owen Dursley and Richard McQuade returned to the bench, alongside Kevin Exell who has recovered from injury.

Craig Cairns got the game under way with Runcorn Town attacking the Halton Fabricatio­ns End.

The game opened up slowly during the first 20 minutes, with both sides having a few chances each, but neither were able to capitalise.

Chester FC opened the score books after 22 minutes when the ball was crossed in from the left and clipped the crossbar and George Waring nodded in the rebound.

After 27 minutes, Chester doubled the lead, the ball was crossed in and Danny Elliott stuck out a leg and poked the ball into the net.

The score was 3-0 after 31 minutes, Danny Elliott with his back to goal had enough space to turn and shoot the ball into the bottom right corner.

After 36 minutes, the score was 4-0. Following a mistake by Adam Reid, Chester recovered the ball and put in a low cross towards Danny Elliot who then blasted the ball into the net to complete his hat trick and Runcorn went into the break four down.

The score was 5-0 after 56 minutes, Danny Elliott turned provider, crossing the ball low into the box and George Waring tapped the ball into the net.

After 67 minutes the score was 6-0. Danny Elliott scored his fourth goal of the night, after getting on the end of a through ball pass, and he advanced towards goal and slotted the ball past the oncoming Adam Reid.

The score was 7-0 after 89 minutes as substitute Louis Hayes tapped the ball into the net from the right post.
