WINTER NHS BEDS CRISIS

- Dr Simon Walsh BMA consultants committee deputy chair Emergency medicine lead

THE Government cannot ignore warnings from the Royal College Of Emergency Medicine over lack of winter beds.

A survey from the Royal College Of Emergency Medicine warns that an additional 4,000 extra beds are needed this winter to prevent ‘corridor care’,

This is extremely concerning for patients who may face the daunting prospect of being treated in a corridor this winter, and for the staff who will be working under extreme pressure to treat them in this inappropriate environment.

Only last year, the BMA warned that thousands of extra beds were needed for winter and – one year on – the same urgent calls are being repeated; the Government cannot afford to ignore these warnings anymore.

The NHS is already on the backfoot after experiencing its worst summer on record and if we are to avoid another, possibly even worse winter of chaos, the Government must deliver urgent investment to ensure these much-needed beds and resources reach the frontline. free holiday, while the person they care for comes on a free break with us, Revitalise, through our brand-new Grace Award For Caring.

There are approximately 7.3 million carers in the UK, many among your readers, and this award has been created to recognise and reward those partners, relatives and friends who spend their lives selflessly devoted to caring for their loved ones.

I work for Revitalise – an amazing charity that creates holidays for disabled people and carers at Sandpipers in Southport. Revitalise has two other fully accessible holiday centres in Chigwell, in Essex, and Southampton.

Carers save the economy £132bn per year, which is more than the NHS budget. The Grace Award For Caring was named not only because it takes grace to care for someone, also because it takes grace to accept care from someone.

That’s why we’re showing our support for carers across the UK, calling for people to nominate a carer they know who truly deserves a break.

The campaign is being fronted by television presenter and tennis champion, Sue Barker OBE, who has said: “I am thrilled to be launching this award with Revitalise to give carers the opportunity to go on a welldeserved break while those that they care for enjoy a free holiday with Revitalise.

“I’m really looking forward to rewarding deserving carers in the UK with the time off they need to relax and recharge.”
