Fire cadet leaders sought
RUNCORN Fire Station is on the lookout for adult volunteers to join its cadet scheme.
The station on Heath Road teaches youngsters aged between 12 and 17 firefighter skills and trains them towards qualifications while having fun and making friends.
The cadets meet every Wednesday night and also have the chance to enjoy activities and social trips at weekends and school holidays.
A Cheshire Fire And Rescue Service spokesman said more volunteers are needed.
He said the role provides the chance to support, inspire and influence young people, develop skills and leadership qualities, gain qualifications, be part of the fire and rescue service, meet like-mind, be part of a friendly team and have fun.
Vicky Wrest, CFRS youth development manager, said:
“Our fire cadet groups provide youngsters with an exciting and unique opportunity to develop both personal and social skills by promoting self-discipline, teamwork and citizenship.
“As well as learning the basic skills of a firefighter, they get the chance to gain Duke Of Edinburgh awards and to enjoy things like outdoor activities, camps and social trips.
“Many of our cadet groups play an important role in their community, supporting local initiatives.
“The older Cheshire fire cadets can also apply to go to Nepal with cadet leaders to help build schools in rural communities and enable the children living there to have an education.
“These opportunities would not be possible without the support of adult volunteers.
“We are looking for new adult volunteers from all walks of life for the Runcorn Fire Station cadet group.
“There’s no set profile and, with training provided, there’s no need to have any firefighting experience or a fire and rescue service background.
“All you need is to be over the age of 18 and have a drive and commitment to help young people thrive in your local community.”
Vicky added: “If you have a few hours a week to spare to help with the running of the Runcorn Fire Station cadet group please call our youth engagement team on 01606 868 654 or email vicky.wrest@ cheshirefire.gov.uk
“Alternatively you can download an application pack from www.cheshirefire.gov.uk/ jobs/volunteers/cadet-leadervolunteers. You will be needed when the fire cadet group meets at Runcorn Fire Station on Wednesday nights, as well as on some weekends during school term time. There are different roles available and any assistance volunteers can give will be greatly appreciated.”
Cheshire Fire Service said all of its cadet group adult volunteers have to complete a Disclosure And Barring Service check.
