Scientists win Crest awards

-

STUDENTS who are part of the Tomorrow’s Scientists Programme at Cronton Sixth Form College are celebrating after achieving Gold and Silver CREST Awards (Creativity In Science And Technology).

CREST Awards are nationally recognised within the scientific community and are designed to provide curriculum enhancement.

They give young people the opportunity to choose their own investigation subject which is then assessed by industry experts from the STEM and education sectors.

The talented Cronton students chose to research a number of interesting projects which addressed real world STEM problems. These included; ‘Is the five second rule valid?’, Which product cleans best?’, The trajectory of shrapnel during an explosion’ and ‘How acidity affects coral reefs’.

Working in small groups throughout the year, the students completed their research projects which they then presented as a biological report at the College’s IDEA Centre to an audience of staff, students and special guests.

The project write ups were then submitted to the CREST Award for marking. As a result of the hard work, the students gained the prestigious Gold and Silver Awards, an impressive achievement.

Ruth O’Dea, science tutor at Cronton said, “It is amazing for us to share in the students’ passion for knowledge and for science in particular.

“They have worked with great energy and commitment which really shone through on their projects.”
