Vacant cafe at Phoenix Park put back into use

AVACANT cafe has been brought back into use at a popular Runcorn leisure spot.

‘CHI’ now occupies what was the Urban Cafe at Phoenix Park, between Castlefiel­ds and Windmill Hill.

The project was drive by the Creative Health Initiative­s (CHI) not-for-profit, which aims to boost wellbeing and fitness in Halton.

It was officially opened by Halton mayor Margaret Horabin on October 18, whose visit was followed by Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram on Friday, October 25, when he met CHI directors Phil and Sharon Thornton, staff and volunteers plus Halton Castle ward councillor Chris Carlin.

Support for the cafe’s reopening was drawn from a range of sources, with funding from Windmill Hill Big Local, WellHalton and Halton Borough Council, kitchen equipment donated by Howdens Joinery and exterior paintwork courtesy of Halton Veterans.

Phil Thornton, CHI director, said the cafe offers a menu of nutritious, home-made food and coffee from Wirral-based roasters Adams And Russell plus other drinks.

The centre is also be available to hire to residents, community groups, organisati­ons, and businesses for events, meetings, celebratio­ns, training and health and fitness activities.

Mr Thornton said it also features Runcorn’s first ‘Changing Places’ approved disability changing room and toilet, with

● a fully automated hoist and bed, allowing those with disabiliti­es to enjoy the park’s attraction­s.

Halton’s mayor Margaret Horabin declared the cafe officially open.

Mr Thornton said: “We are grateful to all the support we’ve had from the Big Local partnershi­p, Well Halton, Halton council, Howdens and our local volunteers.

“We want the centre to be a vibrant addition to the local area’s facilities and encourage healthier lifestyles by offering quality food at affordable prices with a range of activities that promote health and wellbeing.

“We will also celebrate local talent and the heritage of the area by using the building as an exhibition space.”

Mike Amesbury, Labour MP for Weaver Vale, said: “This is a fantastic initiative and these much-needed facilities will be a huge boost to the local community.

“A lot of work has gone into turning this dream into a reality and a tremendous amount of credit has to go to everyone involved for getting it off the ground.”

Cllr Ron Hignett (physical environmen­t), said: “I’m really pleased to see the café brought back into use for the local community to enjoy.

“It is an added attraction for Phoenix Park and it’s been great to b be able bl to support CHI in bringing this project to fruition.”

CHI is open from 9am to 4 4pm on Md Monday, T Tuesday, d Thursday and Friday, and 9am to 3pm on Saturday and Sunday.
