Dominant Wids flex muscles to stay top

up the half century of points.

To their credit, Aldwinians responded almost immediately as Dave Tootill crashed over from close range for their second try.

Their joy though, would be short lived, and normal service was quickly resumed in a frantic last few minutes as Jamie Patient crossed for his fourth try, followed by a quick one-two from Aaron Duggan which completed his hat-trick.

A couple more Andy Owens conversions completed the scoring to wrap up a great day at the office for the Widnes faithful.

Unsurprisingly, it was Jamie Patient who was selected as the player of the match closely followed by several of his team mates.

Elsewhere, there was also a welcome return to action for the evergreen and larger than life Liam Wilde who making his return to the first team after a long absence, along with Antony Leadbetter who was also making his first appearance of the season.

Afterwards head coach Andy McIntosh said “Last week we were poor and our effort and discipline were called out. This week though we were outstanding right across the park. Aldwinians are a decent side so to rack up a score like that was very impressive, the lads were quality today.

“We also welcomed a few old faces back into team today which only adds to the competition for places as we press on. Our backs showed another level today, and it was very difficult to single out the man of match as all the back line were class.”

In the other senior fixture, the Seconds beat Liverpool Collegiate 27–8 away from home to lift themselves up to fifth place in Division Two South of the Halbro Leagues.

Widnes have yet another rearranged home game on Saturday, this time against Didsbury Toc H.

The game has been switched to Heath Road because their opponents Ford Lane headquarters is based in a low lying flood plain and currently under several feet of water and out of action for the foreseeable future.

Didsbury proved to be one of the red-and-blacks’ more formidable opponents last season and ran them close on each of the three occasions they met.

The most memorable of all perhaps was the game in January when a successful last-minute 50-metre penalty from Andy Owens won it for the Wids.

This season, Didsbury haven’t yet perhaps reached those heights of the last campaign and have slipped up a couple of times against opponents they perhaps were expected to have beaten.

But they did sound a warning in their last game with a big away win at Liverpool St Helens to show that they are almost back to their best and firing on all cylinders once again.

Widnes, meanwhile, remain in confident mood, and will be looking to further extend their unbeaten start and keep their place at the top of the ADM Premier League.

In the other senior games; the Seconds host Manchester, whilst the Thirds are also scheduled to play at home against Hoylake. All games kick off at 2.15pm.
