Beating loneliness over holiday season

-

THIS Christmas, Halton Borough Council is calling on the support of the community, as it works to tackle the devastating health effects of loneliness and social isolation, particularly among elderly people.

Loneliness is one of the biggest public health challenges of our time, associated with higher risks of mortality and morbidity.

For many older people, Christmas can be a particularly lonely time, with memories of people who have passed away and happier times.

We can all do a little to help change this.

This year, Halton Borough Council is encouraging people to send, or hand deliver a Christmas card to an elderly neighbour living on their own, or to residents living in council care homes.

This small gesture could make a big difference to someone who is feeling lonely, or who hasn’t had any contact with a real person for a while.

Cllr Marie Wright the Council’s executive board member for health and wellbeing says: “A few friendly words at this time of year, to let an elderly neighbour know you are thinking of them, could make all the difference.

“Loneliness and isolation can lead to mental health problems, but also physical health issues, particularly if someone isn’t active and spending most of their time indoors.

“We all lead busy lives, but taking a few minutes to post a card, or even better have a conversation with someone could really help.”

The council is making Christmas cards available at its Halton Direct Links for people to pick up and send.

The cards include contact details of organisations older people may find useful over the festive period, particularly if they find themselves in crisis, without the support of family or friends around them.
