Election history snapshot

- Frank Bowen, via email

THE Tory victory in the election is only a snapshot in history, like all parliamentery events, and can soon be eclipsed by events over which parliament has no control.

The slowdown in the world economy has already started in the USA and China – and all the European countries, including Britain, have virtualy zero growth at the moment and are heading for a more severe crisis than 2008.

The 2008 banking and financial meltdown was shouldered by the working classes with billions of pounds cut from public services which resulted in 10 years’ austerity; meanwhile, the ruling elite got richer – just look at the CEOs’ pay packets which increased by between 15 and 20%.

So, this election is not the end of the story. The struggle to defend wages and conditions will continue and could develop into national stoppages which have developed in France.

The Tories have no answers to the problems facing the working classes and, faced with another economic downturn, will do the same as before and place the burden on the backs of working people.

Defeat on the political plane will lead to mass action to defend services like the NHS and the transport industry, and all those unorganised people on zero-hours contracts and the minimum wage will become organised.

So, Johnson and co are beefing up anti-union legislation which they hope will prevent mass action in the future. It will be to no avail.

The Labour Party will need to be transformed into a mass socialist party with mandatory reselection as a basis for all those wishing to represent the working class and be prepared to accept a salary comparable to the people they represent, which would clear out the careerists which dominate the PLP and the council chambers.

They would be replaced by people prepared to fight for bold socialist policies in the interests of working people, students and the poorest in our communities.
