We need to fulfil potential – Town boss

- BY SAM CARROLL

PAUL McManus believes Runcorn Town need to ‘fulfil their potential’ after a mixed week.

Town recorded a 3-0 victory at Whitchurch Alport on Saturday to end a four-game winless streak but were on the receiving end of a 4-0 loss at high-flying Bootle on Tuesday evening.

The results leave Runcorn in mid-table and 17 points behind the three promotion places in the NWCFL Premier Division.

McManus’ side were among the favourites to be promoted during the summer but the player-manager admits they must ‘kick-on’ if they are to begin climbing the table.

Speaking after the win at Whitchurch, McManus said: “It was a fantastic result and performance away from home today.

“The first-half we were by far the better side, playing some really good football on what I can only say is the best pitch we have played on this season, even with the bad weather, so just a quick well done to all at Whitchurch to get the pitch in such a condition.

“We went in at half-time deservedly 2-0 up and the second half, of course, they came at us and put us under pressure but I was more pleased than in the first-half.

“it was the perfect away performance. We soaked their pressure up, had more chances ourselves and finally took one to kill the game off at 3-0.

“I’m very pleased to start 2020 on a winning platform which we now need to kick on from and fulfil our potential.”

Runcorn face three consecutive away games in the coming weeks starting with Saturday’s trip to Winsford United.
