Silver Jubilee Bridge to reopen after summer
end of autumn.
In November it said it expects the bridge to reopen to vehicles in summer or autumn.
It has already reopened to bikes and pedestrians full time.
The date of when the bridge will again be accessible to vehicles is important as not only does it mean motorists will have two options to cross the River Mersey in Halton, it also indicates when £9.81m works to build a roundabout in place of a demolished flyover will be completed, as the bridge cannot open until that junction is finished, and which is intended in turn to kick-start the Runcorn Station Quarter regeneration project.
The SJB shut for major renovation works in October 2017 with the opening of the Mersey Gateway bridge and was due to reopen 12 months later, but that date was scrapped with the inception of the Station Quarter roundabout plans.
After that an initial target date was set for spring
August and 2020, but that too was delayed again, with bad weather blamed for the postponement.
Once reopened, the bridge will be tolled to vehicles under the same terms as the Mersey Gateway, with discounts for residents and registered users.
It will also have been reduced from two road lanes each way to one either way, with expanded lanes for cycling and pedestrians.
A Halton Council spokeswoman said: “SJB reopening is based on the construction-demolition programme for the wider Runcorn Station Quarter Pproject which provides vehicle access to SJB.
“The wider project programme is influenced by external factors, such as severe weather, the need to move utilities, technical challenges that require variations in approach, and sequencing of activities.
“The latest programme forecasts completion between August 31 and the autumn.”
