Ash firm application

- BY OLIVER CLAY

A WIDNES industrial works that turns incinerator bottom ash into other products has asked for approval for longer operating hours.

Blue Phoenix UK on Johnsons Lane has asked Halton Borough Council to vary the terms of its Halton Borough Council planing permission granted in March 2015.

Under the change, the site would be able to open from 6am to 8pm on weekdays, with its weekend hours unchanged.

At present the plant can has a planning condition restricting it to operate from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and 8am to 4pm at weekends and Bank

Holidays.

A covering letter submitted by Blue Phoenix with the application said the extra morning hour would not be used for the plant to operate during that hour but would allow plant staff time to prepare to start at 7am.

The proposal’s neighbourhood consultation listed other industrial firms in the area.

Public consultation is due to end today with Halton Council aiming to decide the matter around April 27.

In the letter, Joanna Holland, Blue Phoenix UK development manager, said: “The facility makes a significant contribution to the delivery of sustainable waste management in Widnes and beyond offering a local solution to the borough of Halton to manage its own waste and an opportunity to reduce its reliance on primary won aggregates (raw materials).

“The extension of operating hours will allow the facility to operate to its full potential and maximise the benefits to delivering a sustainable recycled aggregate product avoiding the use of landfill.”
