Runcorn & Widnes Weekly News

Environmental view caused me confusion

- B Cunningham Widnes

IWAS surprised by the two letters about the environment, ( Weekly News, March 12

Letter 2 (Teamwork can fix .... ) was baffling.

It seemed to suggest that Australia’s forest fires, and Indonesia’s burning of rainforest for palm oil, didn’t have the same devastating environmental effect as British drivers going 2mph over the speed limit.

He also considered washing hands for at least 20 seconds was precision. I consider ‘at least’ as vague, not precision.

Letter 1 (Schools hurt our climate), was odd.

The writer must come from a posh estate.

I have never seen kids going to school in caravans.

I assume the writer, when young, went to Carnaby Street, to get their fashion trendy flared trousers, and Afghan coats; before going to Brighton on their scooters.

When I was at school we used pen and nibs, inkwells, and blotting paper, to write in our jotters.

We learnt the twelve times tables. We had no computers. But, I see no harm in kids using them at school. I didn’t get some jobs because I had no computer experience in spreadsheets.

The writer suggests that books are more reliable than computers. I went to the library, in my school days and got a book out, which said: “The Bismarck sunk by the Hood”.

It should have said: “The Bismarck sunk the Hood”.

The little word ‘by’ reversed what happened in history.

Our maths teacher marked our work from an answer book he had.

I proved the book wrong at least a dozen times.

Churchill wrote in his war diaries, that history is written by the victors.

He said the atomic bomb wasn’t needed, the Japanese wanted to surrender weeks earlier.
