Drone photos reveal town’s regeneration

- BY OLIVER CLAY

DRAMATIC aerial footage has revealed the scale of the transformation under way in Runcorn town centre as part of the Station Quarter regeneration quarter.

The shots were captured from the soaring heights by DJ and drone enthusiast Ian Cank, 31, following requests from the public.

Ian, who filmed similar footage for the construction of the Mersey Gateway bridge, was delighted with the results and the ‘amazing’ work under way. While much of the world has retreated into a state of partial hibernation during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown, some work has carried on in the town centre, as land clearance continues following the demolition of the ‘Trumpet loop’ flyover.

The shots show the Station Quarter roundabout taking shape alongside the pale red earth of cleared plots of land ready for redevelopment.

Also featured are the repainted Silver Jubilee Bridge following its multimillion pound refurbishment and part of the cleared stretch of land behind Waterloo Bridge, which could soon be linked to the canal network under the Unlock Runcorn plans.

Ian, who has been filming drone footage for around eight years now, said: “I’ve been getting asked by members of a couple of Facebook groups over the new roundabout in the Old Town, I decided to go down and do it.

“It’s absolutely amazing, it’s amazing what they’ve done.

“It’s so much more open, and it looks so much better – it’s going to be so beneficial.”

Murdishaw resident Ian has also filmed Fiddlers Ferry following its shutdown in March, and the railway bridge walkway from above following a request from a Halton expat living in Australia.
