New President hails efforts of all to keep the club ‘together’

-

The Lancashire County Leagues Management Committee then acted very quickly by declaring the current season over.

Widnes were declared champions again thanks to their 100% unbeaten record in the ADM Premier League.

Sadly, though, they would be unable to have the opportunity of retaining the League Cup or the Lancashire Cup.

On the plus side, though, Andy Owens was deservedly selected as the ADM Premier League Player of the Year.

Off the pitch, we wanted to ensure that we kept in touch with our members and we managed to achieve this by posting a number of regular articles and one-off features on our website and our Facebook, Twitter and YouTube channels.

The topics covered included; On this day in Wids history, looking at significant events which have occurred down the years.

Comedy one-liners, replicating a popular page in our match day programme.

A video montage of each of the last 10 seasons (since our 50 th anniversary celebrations) with commentary by our club president.

Back row forward Mike Garrity set his colleagues a challenge of running, rowing or cycling a total of 1000km in a week.

Players and coaches rose to the challenge and smashed the target.

Our juniors completed a series of home workouts promoted by Sale Sharks.

They also completed a virtual training exercise by conducting the popular #passitonchallenge.

We have also continued to receive excellent coverage in the Weekly News, and we would like to thank them for their continued support for the club at this difficult time.

In order to stay safe and maintain social distancing, we have now started to hold our committee meetings by video conferencing. Similar formats have enabled us to keep in touch with the RFU nationally and locally with the Lancashire RFU team.

As the lockdown is gradually being relaxed, we are now starting to think about how we might restart player training and clubhouse operations in the coming months, whilst following government guidance.

In recent weeks, our juniors have begun some non-contact pre-season training following a risk assessment in accordance with government and Rugby Football Union (RFU) guidance.

Turnout has been good as they value the opportunity to meet up with team mates again.

Feedback from parents has been very positive.

One commented: ‘I think that social distancing measures have been evident and every effort has been made to ensure the health and safety of everyone involved.

The sessions are fab and the boys are benefiting physically and mentally.

Giving the boys their own ball was truly going the extra mile’.

As far as the First Team are concerned, the ADM Lancashire County

RU Leagues have issued a fixture programme for next season assuming we are able to start playing competitively in September.

However, they have also prepared a back-up list of fixtures should the season’s start be delayed.

And, although these are challenging times, we are doing all we can to ensure we are ready to go once we are given the green light and then it will be full steam ahead to make the Wids an even better place going forward.”
