Borough’s top school is revealed

-

WADE Deacon High School has once again been named Halton’s best secondary school in the 2020 Real Schools Guide.

After yielding its position to Ormiston Chadwick Academy last year, the Widnes secondary has returned to the top of the pile, receiving four stars in all categories and moving into the top third of secondary schools in the country.

Part of the Wade Deacon Trust, the school aims to provide ‘a disciplined, supportive and purposeful learning environment allows our students to excel across the whole curriculum and become the exemplary citizens that we want them to be’.

Last year, three-quarters of Year 11 pupils achieved five GCSEs between grades 9 and 4, including maths and English.

School principal Simon Corner said: “Regardless of context, background or prior attainment, our commitment is unwavering in supporting every student here to achieve their potential; to be equipped with all of the skills that they will need to be successful throughout their lives.

“We care about our students and we take care of them.”

An academy since 2013, the school has not been inspected since receiving an ‘outstanding’ rating in 2011.

It is also a centre of excellence for the Duke Of Edinburgh Award and its commitment to arts and cultural education has seen it receive an Artsmark Platinum award from the Arts Council, one of only five schools in the North West to do so.

Mr Corner said: “My commitment is to ensure that our students have an experience here that is unmatched anywhere else; for them to look back at their time with us with fondness – taking with them incredible memories that will be with them for all of their lives.

“Memories of fantastic opportunities, inspirational teaching and an unmatched level of care that has enabled them to achieve their true potential.

“If I had to sum up the essence of Wade Deacon High School, I would say that we are a caring and incredibly supportive school with the highest aspirations and expectations for our young people.

“In turn, our students have the highest expectations of themselves and show us day in, day out how focused they are and how much they want to succeed in so many different ways.”
