Your van can be a home from home

THIS summer is shaping up to be the year of staycations – and being relatively distanced and free to roam in a motorhome is proving to be a popular choice. Driving a motorhome is no harder than driving a car, according to The Caravan and Motorhome Club’s marketing director, Harvey Alexander.

But with many larger motorhomes, you will need to get used to the size of the vehicle as well as rearwards visibility by using the door mirrors more.

A standard driving licence allows you to get behind the wheel of most motorhomes up to 7,500kg, although a weight limit of 3,500kg applies to over-70s and drivers who passed their test before January 1997, unless a medical test or additional test is passed respectively.

If you don’t need the driving licence upgrade, no special training is needed to hire or drive a motorhome.

However, Harvey advises not venturing too far from home for your first trip – just in case you forget something vital or there are any issues that require fixing.

Before you hit the road for the first time, he also suggests getting in a little practice and trying some low-speed manoeuvring. And, if you have one, it’s a good idea to have a trial run at putting up the awning.
