Algorithm-free

- BY CHRISTOPHER MCKEON

TEENAGERS across Widnes and Runcorn celebrated their GCSE results without the chaos that surrounded the previous week’s A-level grades.

With the Government agreeing to abandon its controversial moderating algorithm, teachers have been keen to stress that these were the results their pupils deserved.

Nicola McNamee, headteacher at The Heath School in Runcorn, said: “Just because these students didn’t sit their exams, it does not mean that they should be any less proud of the grades they have received.

“The process we undertook to determine, moderate and verify the grades was significant, and the outcomes reflect that the class of 2020 were a fantastic group of young people; with equal measures of talent and determination.”

Like many schools across the country, Halton’s schools chose to emphasise individual achievements rather than releasing detailed grade breakdowns as they cannot be compared with previous or future results.

Among the successes at the Heath were Abbie Strain and Aidan Shaw, the head girl and head boy, who between them amassed 19 9s and a Distinction*.

Mrs McNamee added: “These two really sum up what our school is about. It is great that our students can secure grades that stand shoulder to shoulder with the very best in the country. That is the core reason we are here. Yet, they are also incredible students who really see the importance of community and leadership.”

At Ormiston Chadwick Academy in Widnes, principal Jennifer LowryJohnson said: “We’re very pleased for our Year 11s who have been able to come into school today and collect their results, which they thoroughly deserve.

“There have been challenges along the way, but after five years of hard work they really deserve the chance to celebrate and I hope they are all very proud of themselves.

“I know there are bright things in store for all of them and everyone here at Ormiston Chadwick Academy will be cheering them on as they get ready to take their next steps.”

One of Ormiston Chadwick’s standout successes was head girl Freya Thornton, who secured nine 9s and is well set to pursue her dream career
