Memorial to commemorate the Covid struggle unveiled
A RAINBOW memorial has been unveiled in Runcorn to commemorate the ongoing struggle against Covid-19.
Bosses at Heath Business and Technical Park invited Derek Twigg MP and Lady Anne Dodd to perform the honour of removing the covering to reveal the boulder sculpture below.
They were joined by Lady Dodd’s nephew and BTP owner John Lewis MBE, Christine Lincoln who won a competition to design a slogan for the memorial, her husband Mike, and web designer Simon Lewis.
A Heath spokesman said the boulders have been at the site since the site’s construction in the 1960s.
Former Heath School deputy headteacher Mrs Lincoln won the slogan competition with her entry ‘community is the pot of gold’.
The rainbow tribute was the idea of Eileen Miller and designed by Alison Albion who are both members of The Heath’s community team.
Mrs Lincoln was presented with £1,000 for her winning slogan, and she donated £800 to Halton Haven and £200 to child cerebral palsy charity Stick And Step.
She also raised a commemorative flag that will fly above The Heath until the Covid-19 pandemic is finally over.
Mrs Lincoln said: “When they launched the Rainbow Tribute competition I only entered to join in the fun, I never expected to win!”
Mr Lewis said: “The rainbow has become a significant symbol of 2020 and, with so many sacrifices having been made during this dreadful pandemic, this seemed the most appropriate memorial to stand as a permanent reminder of these turbulent times.
“Christine’s slogan is particularly appropriate because it reflects the vital importance of community and also the hope that things will eventually get better.”
