Fun day fundraiser put on to help Mary

- BY OLIVER CLAY

ARUNCORN family hit by a devastating diagnosis at the start of the year has received a huge show of support.

Mary Hassey, who is undergoing treatment for a brain tumour, was joined by husband Matty and son Tommy as guests of honour at Runcorn Cricket Club for the fun day event, which was laid on by friends Stephanie Harris, Laura Taylor, and Samy Phillipson.

Mary, who had already lost her father Fran O’Dwyer during the first wave of Covid-19, and family are now hoping for a “small miracle” and her uncle Conn O’Dwyer said the support shown by the huge crowds who turned up might just have been “the start of it”.

He said the turnout ran into the hundreds, with a queue for the bar snaking round the outside of the building and long lines of people for the stalls, raffles, face painting, makeup and hair.

Conn said Runcorn businesses rallied to the cause and made sure the food and entertainment was “exceptional”.

There were performances from dancers, DJs and local act Brothers In Harm’s, and the event raised nearly £4,000.

Conn said: “Mary is a beautiful woman. She is known for her big heart and [being] full of fun.

“Mary is a true warrior woman, a woman who will let nothing stop her, and with a little loving help from all her family, friends and community it looks like that miracle is on its way.

“This is a great cause and a great community effort. There truly is none better than Runcorn folk.”

A special thanks was issued to Emma Duffy, Joanne Marsden, Jean Pierce, Joanne Burke, Jo Jo’s face paints, Claire Preston, Danielle Egan, Charlie Harris, Gill Dunham, Stacey Lane, Sarah Veevers, Louise Bell, Julie Hassey, Steve Hassey, Chris Crisp,

Lynne Prescott was Hassey, Dean Smith, Kate Smith, Alex Pill, Sean Harris, Shelley Craine, Jenny Carney, Pauline Taylor, Shelia Smith, Jan Barnes, John McDermott, Evie McDermott dancers and helpers, Roy Tully and Colin Platt.
