Arrest after man badly hurt in smash

A VAN driver was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a crash on the M56.

At around 5.45pm on Monday, April 11, police were called to a crash on the westbound carriagewa­y near to the Stretton Interchang­e at junction 10.

Police found the crash involved a tanker, a lorry and a white Ford Transit van.

The driver of the van, a 38-year-old man from Clock Face in Merseyside, suffered serious injuries.

He was released from the van by firefighte­rs before being taken to Aintree Hospital in Liverpool by air ambulance. He is currently in a stable condition in hospital.

The driver of the tanker, a 39-year-old man from Bury, was taken to hospital as a precaution­ary measure.

He has since been released and arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

A 54-year-old man, from Belper in Derbyshire, who was driving the lorry, was uninjured. The crash caused major delays on the motorway as as all three lanes were closed.

All traffic was stopped while North West Air Ambulance landed on the scene. The motorway was closed for around two hours.

Five fire engines from Winsford, Penketh, Warrington, Runcorn and Lymm attended along with the Major Rescue Unit from Winsford.

A statement from Cheshire Fire and Rescue said: “Firefighte­rs were called to a road traffic collision on the M56 involving two heavy goods vehicles and one van.

“The crews removed one person who was trapped in one of the vehicles and handed them to the care of paramedics. Lane one and two were closed while the incident was being dealt with and an Air Ambulance doctor also attended to deal with the casualty.”
