Grocer’s bid to avoid a ‘WALL-E’-like future

- BY OLIVER CLAY

AWIDNES mother gave up her job with a major consultancy firm to start her own business as a greengrocer in the hope of helping to spare her son from an apocalyptic future resembling “the Disney film WALL-E”.

Nicola Inman, 35, also wanted a better work-life balance and decided to take the plunge and open The Greener Grocer.

The store is based in a converted shipping container at The Barnyards on Birchfield Road in Widnes, and Nicola said the aim is to make it environmentally friendly, not only specialising in organic fruit and veg but also hosting a refill station for household supplies and providing deliveries including subscriptions for customers in Widnes and wider Cheshire.

Nicola added that she also reached the decision to give up her job with one of the big four consulting firms and open her own business she wanted a career change involving something more sustainable and with a better work-life balance.

In addition to an epiphany watching the BBC David Attenborough documentary Blue Planet II, Nicola’s main inspiration was her son Felix, two, and a desire to steer his future clear of ending up like the apocalyptic rubbishscapes depicted in the Disney-Pixar film WALL-E.

The animation tells the story of the “Waste Allocation Load Lifter EarthClass” droid, the last robot on Earth, who has been left behind to clean up the planet, by then a wasteland and planetary dump.

Former Wade Deacon student Nicola said: “Ever since watching Blue Planet II, it made me realise that every action has a consequence.

“I wanted to do something that could possibly help reduce the impact to the planet in the local community by being cost effective and convenient.

“I am aware that some greener products can cost a lot and with the cost of living going up, you don’t want items to cost the earth, more ways than one.”

She added: “I want to make sure I have helped reduce the impact of climate change in some shape or form so my son can have an environment he can grow up in that doesn’t resemble something out of the Disney film, WALL-E.”

The Greener Grocer can be found online via its own website, Instagram and Facebook.
