MPs glad to see back of ‘discredited’ Boris
MPS in Halton have welcomed a decision by Boris Johnson to step down with one urging his eventual replacement to call a General Election.
Mr Johnson announced his decision to resign as Conservative leader on Thursday, July 7, following a deluge of top level Government resignations.
It is understood he will resign as Prime Minister once a replacement is found in a move which comes less than a month after he survived a leadership challenge.
The previous 48 hours saw dozens of resignations from ministers dissatisfied with Johnson’s leadership after a string of scandals which have included fines for Downing Street parties which broke lockdown laws, and most recently claims that the Prime Minister knew of complaints about “inappropriate behaviour” made against former deputy chief whip Chris Pincher when he appointed him.
Mr Pincher recently resigned following allegations that he groped two men at a private members’ club.
Halton MP Derek Twigg said it was a “national disgrace” that it had taken until now for Boris Johnson to resign.
He said: “Many constituents have been contacting me for months now raising concerns about the behaviour of the Prime Minister and demanding he goes.
“His behaviour over the past few days has further underlined why Boris Johnson is so unfit to fill the high office of Prime Minister - he has put his own position before what is in the best interests of the country and he should go now.”
He added: “The problem is not just the Prime Minister but also the many Tory MPs who have supported him.”
Weaver Vale MP Mike Amesbury, whose constituency covers parts of east Runcorn, said: “I’m sure I speak for many of us in saying it’s good to finally see the back of the discredited, lawbreaking PM Boris Johnson although I note he never said sorry for demeaning the office of Prime Minister and the reputation of Britain.
“But enough is enough.” Mr Amesbury said whoever moves into Downing Street next should call a General Election.
He said: “They’re just shuffling the deckchairs around the sinking ship of a Conservative
Government that is out of time and out of ideas after 12 years.
“They will try and reinvent themselves with a Tory leadership beauty contest with no beauty. They will spend months now, navel-gazing, scurrying around like rats.
“But whoever becomes the anointed Tory Prime Minister should do the right thing and go to the country by calling a
General Election to give people the chance to vote for the Government they deserve.
“One that focuses on the bread and butter issues in terms of helping people through this cost of living crisis - food poverty, spiralling energy bills - properly resources our public services and gives people a fair deal in these challenging times.”
