- BY SHARON MCLEAN

HALTON Farnworth Hornets U13s boys met local rivals West Bank Bears in a semi-final game for a place in the North West Counties Cup final.

The local derby went right to the wire, with West Bank winning 16-12 and progressing to the final of the NWC Cup.

Supporters from both sides turned up in numbers on a very hot Sunday morning to Wilmere lane to cheer their sides on. Both teams came out very strong and it was West Bank that went over the line first to take the lead.

The Hornets came back with a big push, with Joe Heaney breaking through West Bank’s defence to score a great try, levelling the score just before half time.

Both sides came out second half, playing with the same intensity as they had in the first half, despite the extreme heat. Some fancy footwork from West Bank allowed them to score again.

West Bank was now on the front foot, and scored their third try of the game, to take the score to 16-6 The Hornets showed that they weren’t going to give up without a fight.

Cian Winstanley crashed over with the bears’ defenders hanging on to him to score a great try in the corner, then Jackson Tuihalamaka kicked his second conversion of the game to edge the scores closer. The chase was on with only four points in it. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be and the final whistle was blown shortly after, taking West Bank into the final of the NWC Cup.

HFH U14 reds travelled to Golborne in the semifinal of the Lancashire Cup also on Sunday. The lads were triumphant winning 26-10 and securing a place in the final.
