Community has say on ‘green’ hydrogen project

ACONSULTAT­ION has been launched on Cheshire’s first ‘green’ hydrogen project. Cheshire Green Hydrogen will use renewable electricit­y, including locally produced electricit­y from the Frodsham wind farm and from the grid, to generate 20 megawatts of low carbon hydrogen to fuel local industry.

Grenian Hydrogen, the team developing the project, are developing green hydrogen projects across the North West.

The consortium has signed a collaborat­ion agreement under which it aims to develop multiple green hydrogen projects across the North West.

The initial phase of 100MW of projects will reduce carbon dioxide emissions from industry by up to 180,000 tonnes.

Cheshire Green Hydrogen will be located at Protos, the energy and resource cluster near Ellesmere Port, bolstering further the region’s lead in the UK’s burgeoning hydrogen sector.

The low carbon hydrogen will travel via HyNet’s planned undergroun­d pipeline to local industry, including glass manufactur­er Encirc.

The low carbon hydrogen can also be stowed within HyNet’s undergroun­d cavities, contributi­ng to the UK’s wider energy security and enabling locally produced energy to be available when we need it the most, balancing energy demand.

Adam Baddeley, CEO of Grenian Hydrogen, said: “Cheshire Green Hydrogen will support Cheshire and the wider North West’s drive to lead the UK’s hydrogen sector – not only contributi­ng to energy security and cutting of carbon dioxide emissions but creating, and securing jobs, across the region.

“The North West is an ideal place to deploy low carbon hydrogen production.

“Not only can it be distribute­d at low-cost via HyNet’s pipeline network, but we have a large number of industry sites ready and enthusiast­ic to switch to low carbon hydrogen from fossil gas.

“We want to hear from local communitie­s as to their thoughts on the project, what they want to see and how we can work together with them into the future.”

Richard Barker, Developmen­t Director at Peel NRE, said: “Protos is home to innovative energy and resource management businesses, so it’s an ideal location for the Cheshire Green Hydrogen project.

“Origin – the industrial and employment cluster around Protos and Ellesmere Port – is leading the way when it comes to low carbon growth, decarbonis­ing our job-creating industries in Cheshire to become one of the first net zero industrial clusters.

“Cheshire Green Hydrogen is a brilliant example of sustained investment into the region and we’re pleased to be playing a pivotal role in delivering such essential, low carbon infrastruc­ture.”

Ahead of submitting a planning applicatio­n to Cheshire West and Chester Council in the autumn, Grenian Hydrogen are consulting local communitie­s and stakeholde­rs on its plans.
