Drive-thru plans at shopping centre

- BY MARK SMITH Local Democracy Reporter

NEW Starbucks and Burger King drive-thrus could be built in Widnes if plans are given the green light.

A planning application has been submitted by AIM Land Limited for two drive-thrus on the car park of Green Oaks Shopping Centre on Green Oaks Way in the town.

The units would sit adjacent to each other in the existing car park, the first unit would be 1,800 sq ft and the second slightly larger at 1,843 sq ft.

One would be occupied by fast food chain Burger King and the other by coffee company Starbucks.

If given go-ahead it would result in the loss of 125 existing parking spaces.

Outline planning permission was originally granted in March last year for a drive-thru scheme with unnamed tenants, with detailed plans now being submitted.

A planning statement submitted in support said: “The site is located on the eastern side of the

Green Oaks Shopping Centre and is sited between three car park zones.

“It has good visibility facing directly on to Green Oaks Way, with existent and robust vehicular access and parking facilities.”

The plans also include 43 dedicated car parking spaces, eight cycle spaces, four disabled parking spaces and two electric vehicle spaces.

It added: “The area has very strong commercial facilities but lacks development on the eastern side.

“Larger stores such as

Morrisons and the Green Oaks indoor market fronts on to the proposed site area.”

A letter submitted by planning agent Savills on behalf of AIM Land added that the plans would create up to 24 full-time jobs, in addition to jobs created during the construction phase.

It added: “The proposed development will contribute positively towards economic growth in the area by providing socioeconomic benefits through the creation of new jobs which generate income within the area.”
