Widnes CC eager to set off on front foot
CHESHIRE Premier League cricket returns this Saturday when Widnes begin their 2024 campaign against close neighbours Grappenhall.
With the start of the season delayed a week due to weather, captain Tom Evans will be keen to get off to a winning start. Looking to improve last season’s fifth place, Widnes have recruited New Zealand opening bowler, Fraser Bartholomew to bolster their attack.
With Qamar Hafiz and Aaron Soni to take the new ball plus the spin of Aaqib Uppal and Evans himself, the Widnes captain will be aiming to bowl more teams out. In the batting department, the team will be led by Luke McCoy, who topped the averages last year.
With Soni and Rohan luthra benefiting from another year’s experience, Evans will be aiming to put opposing teams under pressure with weight of runs.
Coach Dan Bird has been pleased with the seasons preparations and hopes the players form in the nets transfers to the middle. With a strong team spirit, helped by the number of brothers, the Burns, McCoys, and Hewitts, in the playing set up. Evans feels a championship challenge is possible.
Wickets are pitched at 12 noon this Saturday and supporters are more than welcome.
