SMALL STEPS, BIG STRIDES
Mind how you go
This treadmill drill from running coach Ken Mierke (evolutionrunning.com) will help prevent overstriding. ‘When you’re running in place, you can’t land with your foot in front of you,’ he says. With the belt switched off, run on the spot. Continuing to run, switch the treadmill on to a very slow speed. Every 20 seconds or so, speed it up a fraction. This gives you a sense of what landing beneath yourself feels like, says Mierke. No treadmill? Alternating between running on the spot and slowly moving forward offers a similar learning experience.
