THE LOCATION

The South West Coast Path between Heddon’s Mouth and Trentishoe.

THE EVENT

The 23-mile Red Bull Steeplechase has a knockout format; 500 competitors battle through three cut-off points to be among the 40 who cross the final finish line. Mostly offroad and featuring almost 2,000m of climb, it is brutal but beautiful.

LOCAL FARE

Just a stone’s throw from the race start is the Rising Sun in Lynmouth, a 14th-century inn with views of the bay and a ready pint of the local brew, Exmoor Gold.

FAST FACT

The Valley of the Rocks, near the village of Lynton, is home to a herd of feral goats, many with impressive horns – and no fear of heights.
