THE SLICE IS RIGHT

Bread often gets a bad press, but a recent study1 suggests it may be time to love the loaf. Researchers found that the protein in bread (and some other plant-based foods) has been linked to a lower risk of early death. The data looked at 416,104 men and women over 16 years and found that simply swapping eggs for plant protein led to a 24 per cent lower risk of death in men and 21 per cent in women. For bonus bread points, opt for sprouted whole -grain varieties, which are usually higher in fibre and protein than refined breads, making them more filling.
