DAVID ALBRITTON / Albritton took silver in the high jump at the Berlin Games. He later became a successful track and field coach.
JAMES ELLIS LUVALLE / The track star took bronze in the 400m final. He later became renowned for his scientific career. He graduated with a PhD in chemistry in 1940, and was the first African-American to work at the Eastman Kodak Company.
CORNELIUS JOHNSON / After a fourth place in 1932, the Los Angeles-born high jumper struck gold in Berlin with an Olympic record 2.03m.
FREDERICK POLLARD JR / The son of an American football pioneer, Pollard initially followed in his father’s footsteps, but his talent for the hurdles earned him a place on the 1936 Olympic team. At the Games, he won bronze in the 110m hurdles.
RALPH METCALFE / Metcalfe won 100m silver at the 1932 Games and did the same in Berlin, before joining Owens to secure gold in the 4x100m.
ARCHIE WILLIAMS / He set the WR for the 400m in 1936 before heading to the Olympics; despite running 0.4 seconds outside his PB, he took gold and set an OR of 46.5 seconds. Later, he became one of the first black pilots in US military history.
