Drama group to stage The House of Bernarda Alba

Ruther­glen-based the­atre group, New Vic­tory Play­ers, are all set for their next per­for­mance.

The com­pany will tackle The House of Bernarda Alba, writ­ten by renowned Span­ish drama­tist Fred­erico Gar­cia Lorca at the Art Cen­tre East Kil­bride from Au­gust 27 to 29.

The story is the tale of dom­i­neer­ing ma­tri­arch, Bernarda Alba, who, upon her sec­ond hus­band’s death, im­poses an eight-year mourn­ing pe­riod on her house­hold in ac­cor­dance with her fam­ily tra­di­tion.

Bernarda has five daugh­ters, aged between 20 and 39, whom she has con­trolled in­ex­orably and pro­hib­ited from any form of re­la­tion­ship. The mourn­ing pe­riod fur­ther iso­lates them and tension mounts within the house­hold.

Lorca’s work is renowned through­out the world and he re­mains a fig­ure of in­trigue.

Of­ten re­ferred to in pop­u­lar cul­ture, Lorca him­self was mur­dered dur­ing the Span­ish Civil War at the age of 38. His body has never been found.

The New Vic­tory Play­ers are an es­tab­lished drama group who re­hearse in Ruther­glen, with mem­bers from all over Glas­gow.

Now en­ter­ing their 70th year the club per­form reg­u­larly in East Kil­bride and will be re­turn­ing in Novem­ber for their pro­duc­tion of “Gaslight”.
