Drama group to stage The House of Bernarda Alba

- Douglas Dickie

Rutherglen-based theatre group, New Victory Players, are all set for their next performance.

The company will tackle The House of Bernarda Alba, written by renowned Spanish dramatist Frederico Garcia Lorca at the Art Centre East Kilbride from August 27 to 29.

The story is the tale of domineering matriarch, Bernarda Alba, who, upon her second husband’s death, imposes an eight-year mourning period on her household in accordance with her family tradition.

Bernarda has five daughters, aged between 20 and 39, whom she has controlled inexorably and prohibited from any form of relationship. The mourning period further isolates them and tension mounts within the household.

Lorca’s work is renowned throughout the world and he remains a figure of intrigue.

Often referred to in popular culture, Lorca himself was murdered during the Spanish Civil War at the age of 38. His body has never been found.

Tickets cost £10 and are available from the Arts Centre box office (01355 261000)
