Boss Gus praises rivalstopper

- Will Henshaw

Queen’s Park gaffer Gus MacPherson said Annan’s best player on Saturday was their goalkeeper - after limiting his side to a 1-0 win.

The Spiders got their first win of the campaign at Galabank on Saturday thanks to a goal from Fraser on 41 minutes.

Queen’s were largely the better side during the game, and although Gus is pleased to get the three points, he insisted Annan had Alex Mitchell to thank for keeping the score to 1-0.

Speaking to the Reformer, Gus said: “You’re always pleased to get the three points. You’re always looking and trying to access the group of new players and how they will gel, however, with the win over Annan I’ve seen progress.

“There was also positives to take from the games against Clyde and Berwick.

“I think you go away from home you just want to get the right result. Annan are a good side and it was a tough game, we were playing against the wind for a lot of it.

“Saying that we had a lot of pressure and I thought Annan’s best player was their goalkeeper. He made some good saves and kept the score down, which always gave Annan hope since we were only 1-0 up. Thankfully we saw the game out.”

The Spiders will hope to notch up their second win of the campaign as they take on Arbroath at Excelsior Stadium this coming Saturday (August 23).

Fresh from a 1- 0 over Albion Rovers, Gus knows the Red Lichties will provide a tough challenge but is hoping his side can carry their recent good form in to the game. Gus added: “It’s a good game for us. It’ll be difficult, Arbroath have came down from the league above and won their first two games, they will have aspirations of going straight back up again.

Hopefully we can keep making progress and get the right result.”
