BURNSIDE

Burnside had a busy weekend with the annual director’s versus past president’s day taking place on Saturday and being hosted by club president Eddie Nairn. A match was followed by a meal and an interim report on club activities and financial state of health provided by Eddie and his committee. It was an enjoyable day which saw the past presidents defeating the directors by one shot overall.

This was followed on Sunday by the 2+1 triples event which was once again sponsored by local businessman and club member Bobby Walker. This is now the 10th year which Bobby has sponsored this event and the club are grateful for his continued support.

The games were played in glorious sunshine with the eventual winners being the highly experienced trio of James Barra Douglas, Iain Mcintosh with Ian Cleugh coming at the rear who defeated the fancied outfit of Raymond Blantyre, Kenny Stirratt and skip Donald Hudson. Bobby’s wife Helen then presented the prizes to the successful teams.

The finals of all internal competitions are spread over the next two weekends and members are advised to check the notice board for specific times of matches. The club look forward to a good turnout of members. family and friends to support these games.

Finally in the last game of the Glasgow League, last week Burnside achieved their best result of the campaign with an away victory against title chasing Anniesland BC and a home draw giving Burnside four points on the night to haul themselves up to third position in the league.

KINGSWOOD

Last Tuesday in the penultimate fixture in the Senior Cathcart League two wins ensured Kingswood remains at the top of the league. The final game will be against Castlemilk.

Also on Tuesday the Rutherglen Triples finished the league with one win and one defeat.

On Wednesday in the Cambuslang and District Senior League it was two wins, but this result is too late to have any impact on the league position.

On Thursday in the Glasgow League the final home game was abandoned due to weather and the away game was lost by one shot to Barr and Stroud. The league results and the Kingswood position now hang on the result of the reconvened abandoned game to retain Premier League status.

The ladies had a very busy week when the Kingswood Fours travelled to Linthouse and won a close game in the GWBA semi-final against Bishopbriggs. The final was held the next day at Springburn against Crookston. The game was very close throughout, but Kingswood was always chasing the game and with two ends to play and four shots down they lost a six and the game. The team admitted their opponents deserved to win.

On Thursday it was the Rutherglen and District games at Croftfoot. The pairs, triples and fours were all involved. The pairs lost a close game to Templeton, The triples and fours both played and won against Rutherglen.

Nikki Hutchinson played her singles match earlier in the week and won against Hampden. All the winners now progress to the semi-final which was held at Cambuslang on Monday.

Excitement mounts this week at Kirkhill as they approach finals day on Saturday, August 30. One green has been set aside for semi-finals and finals only this week and the committee are holding a planning meeting to prioritise games for Saturday. It promises to be a great days bowling and all members and friends are invited along to spectate , cheer the winners and commiserate with the runners up.

It looks as though vice-president Roy Linder is already a winner of the Monday night George Adams trophy with an uncatchable points total and games in hand. This week he also has at least four finals to play in, a vital senior fours game with Mount Florida and is duty director, so loads of bowling to look forward to for Roy. The Friday night Harry Noble competition is as yet undecided with several contenders still in the running.

Two senior fours rinks will be playing Mount Florida at home on Wednesday morning trying to win their games and maintain or increase the six point lead in the league held by Kirkhill. Seniors, indeed all members, are encouraged to come along and spectate in the second last week of the league.

In the Cambuslang and District Senior’s League on Monday Rutherglen lost both games against Kingswood. The last game is against Templetons this Wednesday morning.

Last Saturday Rutherglen won at home against Croftfoot in the annual friendly game. Before the game President Duncan Brodie presented a ‘friendship’ trophy which will be played for annually.

Rutherglen’s top five singles lost to Clarkston last Wednesday evening.

The Monday evening aggregate game was won by Duncan Brodie and Eddie Thompson.

WHITEFIELD

Last week saw the conclusion of the Lanarkshire Leagues. The division eight team won three points away to Foxley which should see them finish in a mid table position. There was better news for the Division 18 team who collected five points at home to Blantyre to see them comfortably win their league.

The Monday aggregate was won by Mick Irvine and Michael Rodgers who finished six shots up.

Last weekend the club played the majority of their finals. The gents championship was won by Chris Knape for the fourth time when he produced some excellent bowls to defeat Ally Paton 21-8. The ladies final was a seesaw battle between Georgie O’Hagan and Barbara Morris when the lead changed several times before Georgie finished with two twos to pip Barbara by 21 shots to 18.

In the gents President’s Tam Devenny defeated Michael Morris 21 shots to even. Claire Walker won the ladies President’sCup by beating Agnes Fitzpatrick 21-16.

The Mary Ingles trophy was also won by Claire Walker when she defeated Barbara Morris 21-14.

The secretary’s cup was won by David Russell who defeated Andy O’Hagan 21-9.

The father and son team of Michael and Mark O’Hagan won the gents nominated pairs against Jimmy Welsh and Hugh Dougan by 24 shots to three.

The ladies nominated pairs was won by Joyce Latham and Claire Walker who triumphed by 20 shots to 10 against Agnes Fitzpatrick and Georgie O’Hagan.

Finally, Caitlin Docherty won her third successive championship by 21 shots to six against Aiden Friel. The score line did not reflect the game because although Caitlin dominated, young Aiden played a lot of excellent bowls with no reward. He is surely going to be one to watch for the future.

The remaining three finals will be played over the course of this week.
