Blair and Charlie head for Manchester

Two Stonelaw High pupils are travelling south this week to take part in the 2014 School Games in Manchester.

S6 pupils Blair Gillies and Charlie McFarlane have been selected to play for the Scotland West volleyball team at the UK Sainsbury’s 2014 School Games, which are taking place from tomorrow (Thursday), until this Sunday, September 7.

Irene Hay from the PE department said: “This is a fantastic achievement, as many previous competitors in various sports went on to represent the nation at London 2012.

“We’re absolutely delighted for the pair of them, and hope that they enjoy the experience.

“It’s just wonderful as they are such lovely boys and they were there last year as well. They will enjoy being selected again.”

Stonelaw pupils have also been celebrating successes, at the Scottish Schools Athletics Championships.

Eve Mackinnon and Scott Somerville took part in the event, as did last year’s sixth formers, Alec and Kade Thomas, who won medals.

Eve won a gold medal for the over-17 1500m, Scott won a bronze medal for the 1500m steeplechase, Alec Thomas won a bronze medal for the 100m, while Kade Thomas won a bronze medal for the 200m.

Irene added: “I was there to see them in the evening and it was such a fantastic experience to be in that arena, and for Eve to get the gold was phenomenal. We’re really very chuffed.

“The championships were a marvellous experience for all the athletes, who had the chance to compete at Hampden Park, the venue for the Commonwealth Games.”
