A sparkling 60 years for a diamond couple

- Will Henshaw

A Cambuslang couple will sparkle when they celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary this week.

Duncan and Margaret Stark, of Tanzieknowe Road, were married on September 4 , 1954 at Kirkhill Parish Church.

Both attended the former Gateside Junior Secondary School on Hamilton Road.

In fact, the pair met through their ties to the school as both were members of the badminton section of a former pupils’ club the school ran.

Duncan was 16-years-old and Margaret 18-years-old when they started courting. For their first date they went to see the famous Scottish musical Brig o’ Doon at the King’s Theatre.

They dated for five years before deciding to get married. They were engaged for nine months before tying the knot. For their honeymoon they went to Ayr.

During their working lives Duncan worked mainly as a coal miner and then in the strip mill in Gartcosh.

Margaret held a variety of jobs including working at the Hoover factory and as a bus conductor.

Although the pair are originally from Cambuslang, they moved to Midlothian just after getting hitched so Duncan could work in the coal mines.

However after a slump in the industry they moved to Motherwell, where Duncan started in the steel industry. They moved back to Cambuslangg in 1972.

Theyy have a son, Duncan (58) , and a daughter Anne (56) They also have five grandchildren and one great grand child.

When asked what the secret was to a successful marriage, Margaret replied: “Give and take!” with Duncan adding: “Always be honest with each other.”

They will celebrate the milestone with a family meal.
