The new Aldi store in Cambuslang will open for business on October 23.

With work well under way, the new supermarket – on the site of the former South Lanarkshire College campus on Hamilton Road – will open on schedule.

The German firm revealed to the Reformer that they had originally hoped to open in the summer of 2015, but accelerated their plans due to interest in the area.

The store will create around 30 full and part- time jobs for local people when it is open.

Philip Isherwood, director of property Aldi Scotland, said: “The construction programme is going well and on schedule.

“We are really looking forward to coming to Cambuslang, bringing the Aldi brand for local shoppers, and appreciate all the support and help we received from the local community during our consultations.”

In April last year, representatives from Aldi came to Cambuslang’s CTEC building to show off their plans, and discussed intentions to build a new store on the vacant side of the college, which had lain empty since 2008. The plans were greeted with a warm reception from the public, including Cambuslang Community Council.

Members on South Lanarkshire Council’s planning committee approved the plans at a meeting last July, for the shop and associated car parking spaces.

The supermarket chain passed the final hurdle in their bid to have all permissions in place when they were granted a provisional licence to sell alcohol by the Rutherglen and Cambuslang Licensing Board last December.

The college site was originally sold with the intention of building flats and housing, but the downturn in the property market resulted in the change of use.
