Rutherglen Reformer

Drenched by his flock in the name of charity

- Kenny Smith

The minister of a Rutherglen church took on the ice bucket challenge last week - 20 times over!

Rev John Sanderson, the minister of Rutherglen United Reformed Church on Johnstone Drive, took on the latest charity craze that’s sweeping the nation.

Having been nominated for the ice bucket challenge , John decided to get the members of the church youth group, Criss-Cross, to help out.

In all 20 buckets of water were deposited on his head by the members of Criss-Cross!

Two other leaders of the Youth Group and a church member also undertook the challenge on the night.

John said: “Having been nominated by a member of the church to take the ice bucket challenge it seemed a good idea to involve the members of Criss-Cross and to make it a fun night for everyone as well as raising awareness of the work of these two very worthwhile charities.

“Having 20 buckets of water poured over you is quite an experience but it was one I was more than happy to undertake.

“My thanks to those church members who have added their donations to the funds being donated to the two charities – and an even bigger thank you to the young people for their enthusiastic assistance!”

Funds were donated to the Motor Neurone Disease Association and to Macmillan Cancer Support.

John isn’t the only local member of the clergy to have taken part, as Rev Brian Graham from Cambuslang Baptist Church also doused himself in ice cold water!
