Rutherglen Reformer

SNP needs to start living in the real world

- Holyrood Headlines

Like most people throughout Rutherglen and Cambuslang, who I speak to about the referendum, I would like some straightforward answers to some of the most basic questions about separation.

People are fed up with the fantasy politics of the SNP and the empty vague, and in some cases absurd claims made by Alex Salmond about what would happen if the event of Scotland leaving our family and friends in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

As the referendum draws closer and closer we will no doubt see more scare tactics deployed by Alex Salmond and his SNP Government over things like the currency and public spending.

We have the strength, security and stability of being part of the UK. With £1200 a year higher public spending than the UK average per person, per year, it’s clear we benefit greatly from being part of the world’s oldest and most successful union.

Separation means £6 billion of extra cuts on top of those planned. That’s more than our entire schools budget in Scotland. We hear nothing from the SNP on how they would fill this massive black hole in public spending.

A burning question we have been asking time and time again is just what is Mr Salmond’s plan for the currency in the event of a Yes vote? He appears to be living in a fantasy world where he seems to think that whatever he says goes but I’m afraid that’s simply not the case.

It’s not good enough for him to tell the rest of the UK what to do, he wants to split our country up therefore he should give us the facts and information before we go into the polling booth to cast our vote.

Why does the SNP casually play down the importance of currency and tell us nothing? Currency is key to this whole debate, it’s our wages, our pensions, our bills, our rent and mortgages.

People are clear that the fantasy and deceit must stop, Mr Salmond and the SNP need to start living in the real world with the rest of us.

This decision is too important to be left to uncertainty and vague assertion after another. I hope local people decide to vote No because I believe it is in the best interests of Rutherglen and Cambuslang and for Scotland. I believe it with my head and with my heart.

LEAP of faith… I noticed in last week’s Rutherglen Reformer a call out for volunteers to help at the Lightburn Elderly Association Project (LEAP) and would urge anyone in the local area looking to give something back to the community to sign up.

LEAP empowers people over 50 to stay an active independent member of the community, by providing a free handyperson service and befriending service.

I have volunteered in the past for the handyperson service and cant praise it enough.

The entire team at LEAP do a fantastic job and really do make a difference to people’s life’s.

So this may be the perfect way to give a little something back and help make our area a better place to live.

For further information contact LEAP on 0141 641 5169.
