Dougie’s round was gone with the wind

-

Douglas went out last Friday to see if he could break his target at Kirkhill - but his chances were blown away in the wind.

Gusts of over 30mph and eventually heavy rain put paid to any chance he had, and when he couldn’t even keep the club in his hands at the 16th, he decided to call it a day.

Not that he’d played particularly badly. He was ticking along nicely before the wind pushed his tee shot at the par three 12th out of bounds, and he still managed to record five pars and a birdie in his 15 holes.

But he probably lost seven shots to the wind alone, even on the greens, prompting him to go to Duncan for advice on playing in poor weather.

Our professional said: “Preparation is the key.

“It’s a case of two or three towels in your bag, a good brolly and maybe some of those wet gloves so your hands don’t get slippy.

“You probably need to take one club more in the rain. So if you’re 150 yards away you might hit a six iron, but in the rain take a five.

“Play within yourself. If you’re playing in the wind then slow your swing. Tempo and rhythm is all important because the wind will play havoc with it.

“Concentrate on your short game because you want to keep the double bogeys off your card.

“If you’re playing in a medal, remember everyone else will be struggling and making the same mistakes so if you can make less you’ll be in good shape.”
